The old city of Mumbai is sometimes called the
Island City. One may ask, oh was Mumbai an island? Good
point, sir, it is not. But you need to go back to a history book
to learn why it is called so. In Mumbai, or Bombay, used to be
seven islands in the sea. Islands are cut off to fill up the sea
to make flat lands, and in the end the old city was connected to the
sub-continent just like a peninsula. This historical fact is left
behind in the name of Island City, although it is not so now.
Thus, every place you may go you see the sea.
The western side of Mumbai has the Gateway of India facing the Bay of
Bombay to the West. On the eastern side, there is a road called
the Marine Drive and the Chawpati Beach, where a large crowd would
gather around to cool off in the evening. I try to capture the
island city of today.
