Egypt is located in a strategic position where the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea are nearby. If a canal is excavated to connect the two seas, then the ships from Europe would not have to navigate all the way to the southern tip of Africa to go to Indian Sea. When the Suez Canal was completed in 1869, it gave a revolutionary effects in martime transport. Only after 13 years, however, Egypt was virtually colonized by England, which lasted until 1956 when Nasr appointed himself President of Egypt and declared independence. During this about 100 years, a number of European architectural pieces were built in Cairo. Most of them are still seen in Cairo with often damaged facades.
The late 19th century Europe saw the spread of Arts Nouveau. Arts Nouveau was associated with free curves in shapes and edges as well as decorative details. It took a few decades for the arts nouveau architecture to reach Egypt, and took shape there. The buildings in the new part of Cairo was full of lightweight curvature, decorations and unrestricted combination of colors.
I took a walk in the arts nouveau architecture in Cairo today.
