The one that controls the Nile governs Egypt -- so an old saying goes.  For the ancient kings of Egypt, controlling the Nile meant to protect the territory and utilize the fertile soil it would bring.

There is a word Kilometer - which is coined with the word Nile for the river and meter for measuring., meaning a measurement station of the Nile. There is one of such  station at the southern tip of Rodah Island in the Nile south of Cairo.  There have been said to be a few of such stations throughout the Nile river and its tributaries, making measurement of the river.  The measurements were used to forecast the agricultural production of the coming year.

The old Cairo dating 2,000 years or so is located in the southern part of Cairo near the Nile river.  Near the southern tip of Rodah Island in the Nile, there is a unique looking bridge which is nicknamed the French Bridge.  Crossing this bridge to Rodah, and make a left after the bridge, you could come to an area where a few small museums are flocked together.  You may ask about Kilometer of people there and push your way through without giving up.  The Kilometer is accommodated in a small rotunda near the tip of the island.

Once inside the building, you may find a hold dug deep into the ground lined with stone blocks.  A staircase is going down to the bottom.  In the center of the bottom of the  hole is a stone pillar with marks on the surface for measurement.  On the stone wall are a few horizontal pipes that connected  to the Nile river water which lead the water to the Kilometer.  At present, the connecting pipes .are clogged and there is no water inside.

This Kilometer was built in the year 716, under the Islamic regime.  Some say that there had been some sort of Kilometer in this same place before.  Looking up, I was astonished - the inside face of the rotunda is decorated with colorful patters.  This decoration was said to be made by Mohammed Ali, who control Cairo in the 19th Century.  His cathedral called Gamma Mohammed Ali is a famous and memorable site for the Ottoman Turkey tycoon.
