　今回の出張中、あまり休みが取れなかったのだが、やっとある週末に半日、休みが取れた。週末と簡単にいったが、イスラエルは土曜日が安息日だ から土日と休みのが普通だ。ところがパレスチナはイスラム教の国だから金曜日が聖なる日でお休み。イスラムの国は、最近は金土と休む国が多いのだか、パレ スチナは木金と休む。それで私はというと、パレスチナとイスラエルを行き来していたから、結局どっちも休みそこねて、休日の非常に少ない出張になってし まった。それではいかんと、ある金曜日の午後を休みにして、それで初めてエルサレム訪問が叶った。
　エルサレムは民族的にはイスラエル人とパレスチナ人がモザイク状にすみ分けているし、さらに宗教的にはユダヤ教とキリスト教、イスラム教がいずれもエル サレムを聖地としているから話は複雑である。もともとユダヤ王が基礎をつくった町だが、そこにユダヤ教の宗教改革者として現れたイエスキリストがこの地で 受難を受けて息を引き取ったがそのご復活。さらにはイスラム教がこの周辺の広い地域を席巻しイスラム化した。イスラエルの建国以降は、宗派や民族が入り乱 れて地を流すことがたびたびであった。一日も早くこの地に平和が訪れることを期待しよう。
　エルサレムに到着したのが午後3時ころで、日が落ちるのは早く5時過ぎだから2時間ほどしかない。まずは全体を見ようとオリーブ山へ、そしてライオン門 から旧市街に入って、キリストが十字架を背負って歩いたという悲しみの道を歩いた。最後はキリストが磔にされ息を引き取ったというゴルゴダの丘の頂上だ が、ここには聖墳墓教会が建てられている。

  During this visit, I had little time to myself.  Israelis take Saturday and Sunday off, while Palestinians take Thursday and Friday off.  As for me, as I was moving back and force between Israel and Palestine, it got me restless.  On one weekend at last, I had a half day off to visit Jerusalem. 
    Jerusalem is inhabited by Israelis and Palestinians/Arabics like a mosaic pattern.  Religiously, the city is the holy place for the Jewish, Christians and Moslems.  This is all the outcome of the long history of the city with one people taking hegemony after another.
     I arrived in Jerusalem at 3 o'clock or so, and there were only two hours before the sun set.  We went to the Olive Mountain first to have a glimpse of the city.  From there, we entered the old city from the Lion Gate and walked in the street where, about 2 thousand years ago. Jesus walked with a cross on his back.  The passage led to the top of the Golgoda Hill where the Church of Holy Sepulchre stands.
