一年には春、夏、秋、冬という四季があって、それが移ろいながらまた一つ歳をとる。日本という四季のはっきりした国に生まれ育った私は、季節 ごとに変わる町の姿を眺めるのが楽しみの一つだ。その中でも「秋」という季節は特別なものではないだろうか。夏の間に育った葉が秋色のモザイクに色づき、 透明な秋の青空に映える。その不思議を目の当たりにしたら、詩人でなくてもものを思うだろう。
　ジャズの名曲に「ニューヨークの秋」という曲がある。続く歌詞は、「なぜこう心惹かれるのだろう？ニューヨークの秋、芝居初日みたいに心ざわめく」と、 この曲は秋の訪れの軽い興奮と期待を主題にしている。ふと、トーキョーの秋はどうだろうと思った。日本の秋は、いつもそこはかとない寂しさとともに、短調 の調べで語られるからだ。
　秋は春とともに日本人の好きな季節だろう。秋を愛でようと紅く染まった山や渓谷を見ようとマイカーを出し、果てしない渋滞にはまることがなかっただろう か。いや、秋の色づく木々を見ようとするなら、わざわざハンドルを握ることもない。都心の大きな公園、たとえば新宿御苑や明治神宮外苑や御苑に行けば、そ こはもうオータム・ワンダーランドなのだ。ちなにみ東京の銀杏は1１月上旬、紅葉は11月下旬くらいというのが目安だ。郊外の山や渓谷より半月から1ヶ月 ほど遅い。
　新宿御苑が私にとって一番、気持ちの休まる紅葉スポットだ。大きな水辺があって、色 づいた紅葉の大木の彩りが水面に映える。都心で紅葉、お手軽にして豪華、こんな贅沢、黙っていられません。

    The year has the four seasons; the spring, summer, autumn and winter, and after the passing of the four, one gets one year older.  I was born in Japan where the four seasons are distinct, watching and feeling a season to pass is a deep felt pleasure.  The leaves that have grown strong and large get a little weak with the spell of cold weather, and in a while tinted against a deep blue autumn skies.  Such scenery makes everybody an instant poet.
    There is a famous Jazz number titled "Autumn in New York".  It goes, "Autumn in New York, why does it seem so inviting? Autumn in New York　it spells the thrill of first nighting" and depicts light excitement and expectation.  It made me wonder what the autumn in Tokyo look like.  For the autumn in Japan is almost always desolate and lonely, and the music on autumn is in a minor key.
    Autumn is a favorite season for the Japanese, together with spring.  If you set out in a car to see colorful mountains from Tokyo on an autumn weekend, you may end up stuck in the nose to tail traffic jam.  Id you would like to see the tinted trees, just stroll around in historical gardens and parks in the heat of Tokyo, such as Sinjuku Gyoen and JIngu Gaien.  The best time to visit there is November.  Sinjuku Gyoen is my favorite autumn wonderland - this is no secret and I cannot keep quiet.
