カルカッタは、他の多くの魅力的な都市がそうであるように、川辺の都市である。その川とはカルカッタの市街地
の西側を北から南に流れるフーグリ川のことである。フーグリ川は、ガンジス川、いやインドでは「ガンガー」と呼んだほうが感じがでる、の分流にあたる川
だ。分流というのは、一つの川が分かれてできた川だ。つまりフーグリ川の水の一部は聖なるガンガーの水だ。フーグリ川は聖なる川の流れを汲む、とでもいえ
ようか。
伝説によれば、ガンガーはもともと天上を流れる河だったそうだ。死者を荼毘（だび）にふしたあとの灰にガンガーの水を懸けると、死者の魂は天界に行ける
という。パギーラタという名前の王が、その天上の川を地上に降ろす力を得たとき、大河ガンガーの水を地上を水浸しにしないよう、シヴァ神が自分の髪をほど
いて水をいったん受け止めてから地上に降ろした、という。もっとも、天上の川が地上におりるというのは、ヒマラヤ山脈に源を発したガンガーが、平野に出て
大河となることを指しているのかもしれない。
聖なる川を渡って、向こう側にいってみた。向こう側とは、カルカッタの対岸、ハオラーのことだ。ハオラーに行くには、フーグリ川に架かる橋を渡るか、あ
るいは船に乗るしかなさそうだ。橋は二つあるが、その一つは巨大な鉄橋、ハオラー橋だ。よく見ると川の中には一つも橋脚がない。下流に港があり、橋脚を川
の中に経てると流れ
が変わって、せっかく維持している航路に土砂がたまるなどの影響を懸念してのことらしい。ハオラー橋はフーグリ川を一跨ぎにしているのだ。
船で行き来するのも、また楽しい。ハオラーに船着場があって、大小さまざまな船で上下流の船着場まで行くことができる。船がよいのは、料金が４ルビー
（10円ほど）くらいからと安いことに
加え、川を眺めながら風に当たる贅沢、そして何よりも渋滞がない。
カルカッタはフーグリ川なしには考えられない。川と都市は、ここに深くちぎりを結んでいる。
.Calcutta is, as many of other cities, a riverine
city. The river here is the Hugli river, which is a distributary
of the Ganga river. A distributary denotes a river that branches
off from the main river. This means that the water of the Hugli
in part comes from the Holy Ganga.
According to a legend, the Ganga was a heavenly
river. It was said that pouring water of the Ganga over the
ashes, the diseased would reach the heaven. When a local king
endeavored for pulling down the river to the earth to pour the water on
his beloved, Shiva came and unwounded his hair to stop the water for a
while so that it would not flood the earth. The legend might just
be referring to the fact that the Ganga originates the high mountains
of Himalayas, and needed to be well controlled before flushing into the
plain.
I tried crossing the holy river to the other
side. There are two bridges across the Hugli near Calcutta.
One of them (the one upstream) is called the Howrah Bridge. This
is a gigantic steel bridge across the river. You may notice that
there are no piers in the river. It was apprehended that piers in
the water may disturb the river flow and put hindrance to the port
downstream.
Another way to cross the river is by boat.
Near the Howrah station there is a ferry terminal. The boat trips
are very cheap (starting from 4 rupees, or 10 cents), and you can enjoy
the journey up and down the river with no traffic jam. Wouldn't
that be good?
The river and the city are close together here.
