クロントイ市場はバンコクの中央市場だ。東京でいえ築地の中央市場みたいな場所だ。クロントイ港がそばにあるから、 特に海産物が豊富だ。値段も安いし、種類も豊富だから、たくさん買い物をするときには便利な場所だ。ある朝、コンパクト・カメラを一台、首にぶらさげて、 クロントイ市場を隅から隅まであるいてみた。
　やはり早朝には漁船が漁を終えて港に帰って来るのだろうか。早朝から市場は賑わっている。魚のほかに、エビやイカ、カニ、貝も豊富だ。切り身もあれば、丸のまま、あるいは生きたま ま泳いでいたりもする。野菜や調味料もたくさんあるから、この市場を一周すれば魚貝から肉、野菜、果物、調味料とタイ料理の必需品がすべてそろう。
　もっとも普通の買い物であれば、町のスーパーや、あるいはところどころにある、ちょっとした市場（タラート）ですんでしまうから、わざわざクロントイま で行く必要もないのだ。どちらかというとプロの仕入れ人がおもな買い手の、卸売り市場といったところだろうか。

    Klong Toei is the central market of Bangkok.  This market is close to the port of Klong Toei and so there are plenty of seafood and the prices are good.  So this is a good place to do some real shopping.  On one morning I went out to this market with a compact camera hanging from my neck, and walked every hole and corner.
    Maybe fishery boats come back early in the morning with the day's catch, and the Klong Toei market is busy from the early morning.  In the market there are fish, shrimp, cuttlefish, shellfish and so on.  Various condiments are also sold here.  So if you walk around the market, you could get everything that are needed for Thai food. 
    For ordinary shopping supermarkets in the city suffice or even a small town markets (called talent in the Thai language) are good enough.  So this Klong Toei market is more for the professionals.
