アンコール遺跡とは一つの遺跡ではなく、時代の異なる数十の遺跡の総体である。これは一度そこ に行ったことのある人は身をもって体験することだ。誰しもが訪れるアンコールワット、アン コールトムを別格とすれば、あとはアンコールを歩く人がそれぞれ、あちこちの遺跡に行ってみて自分の足と目で確かめ、好きな遺跡を見つければよい。
　私の場合、アンコール遺跡で好きなものはと問われると、プリアカーン、と答える。アンコールの基本原理は、天に向かって石を積み上げていく、いわば山の ように、あるいは丘のように上を目指す構築物的であると思う。それに対して、プリアカーンは少し異なる。真っすぐな回廊の奥深く、石枠が無限に連なるよう に細長い空間を見せ、そこに光と影が交差していったりする。
　プリアカーンは、アンコールトムを建造させたジャヤヴァルマン7世王が、仏教の大学として建立したものだ。タプロムはプリアカーンの近くにある。プリアカーンが仏教大学とそればタプロムは僧院であったようだ。ここには仏僧た ちが多数暮らしていたようだ。ジャヤヴァルマン7世王は自らも仏教に帰依したといわれてい る。仏に祈りを捧げるジャヤヴァルマン７世王の座像はプノ ンペンの国立博物館を始め、タイのピマイ国立博物館などに何体かが収められている。半眼というのだろうか、遠くを眺めるともなく薄く明けられた目元、静謐 に支配された背中・・・。王は仏に何を祈ったのだろうか。

   The Angkor Ruins are not a single site, but a collection of dozens of historical sites with different age and character.   This is what is felt by some one who visited Angkor.  Putting aside the popular Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, other ruins are left for visitors to see and feel by themselves, and find the one the is his or her favorite.
    In my case, I answer that I like Preah Khan best.  Unlike most of the Angkorian ruins that seek to reach the heaven by going upwards, Preah Khan has a sense of space.  As you go into the corridor, you may see repeated stone frames that make the direction of the corridor leading to the eternity patterned with light and shadow coming from nowhere. 
    Preah Khan was build by Jayavarman VII, the same king that ordered the Angkor Thom to be built.  Preah Khan was said to a like a Buddhism College, and the nearby Ta Prom a monastery.  The King himself was a Buddhist.  You may check out one of the images in which the King is preying to Buddha, for example at the National Museum in Phnom Penh.  Motionless eyes, thick lips that are not open to say a word, and the back that is quiet like a lake at night - what were the king's wishes?
